Overview of Small Flies
As a rule, the flies covered in this category (Small Flies) have similarities other than their size. Filth Flies and Biting Flies are covered in their own separate categories. These small flying insect pests are usually found breeding in and feeding on damp organic matter or the organisms that grow in such materials. Locating and eliminating these breeding grounds/food sources is the heart and soul of fly control, especially small flies which infest homes and other structures. Source of fly breeding and feeding will quickly narrow down possible sources of fly infestations.
Adult flies are easily killed by space sprays or fogs and (in most cases) can be captured using pheromone traps or plain sticky traps. These are useful tools but are only successful when used with other integrated pest management (IPM) procedures. These procedures include careful inspection, breeding site elimination and other ongoing sanitation programs.
Small flies cannot usually be controlled using surface sprays. The exceptions to this rule include spraying the surfaces of dumpsters, trash cans or other outdoor areas where the flies actually rest or the soil where Fungus Gnats are breeding in areas around the exterior of infested homes.
